Aug 5, 2021 at 14:03 comment added David Siegel @MichaelMcGovern Your ststmrnty could hav been as obvious and non-controversial as "2+2=4" and ther is still no liability for truthfully informing your employer that you made it, and in most US states if your employer chooses to regard this as grounds for negative action s/he can. That may be foolish and unjust on the part of the employer, but employers can be foolish and unjust. The person reporting the statement may have intended harm, but a truthful statement is not defamation.
Aug 11, 2017 at 23:41 comment added Michael McGovern @ohwilleke Thank you for expanding your response. I had a suspicion from the beginning that I did have no recourse. I just felt wronged by the other party involved but I wasn't necessarily seeking action against my employer should they choose to take action against me. I realize that in at-will states employers have broad privileges to terminate employment. Therefore, my employer could terminate me so late for the fact that the contact from the people on Facebook annoyed them.
Aug 11, 2017 at 22:54 comment added Michael McGovern I'd be happy to tell you, but I don't think this is the correct venue, because the auto-warning always comes up that he comments are not a good place for extended discussion.

Aug 11, 2017 at 22:43 comment added ohwilleke @MichaelMcGovern Also, as someone who was a math major who got most of his spending money in college and law school (and some even after I graduated from law school) as a math tutor, I'm dying to know what the mathematical concept in question is, as I can't imagine one that would be so inflammatory in the eyes of someone who employed a math tutor. But, I respect your prerogative not to say so as it really isn't necessary to answer the question.

Aug 11, 2017 at 22:19 comment added ohwilleke #MichaelMcGovern A fair point. I toned down the "stupidity" statement I made the first time around.
Aug 11, 2017 at 22:16 comment added Michael McGovern I didn't take issue with their disagreement. I took issue with the fact that they thought they could reach out and try to hurt me.
Aug 11, 2017 at 22:14 comment added user4657 Saying things on the internet and then taking issue with other people forming an opinion after reading them is generally not an indicator of good sense, whether or not the things said were perfectly true and reasonable and not offensive in any way.

Aug 11, 2017 at 22:10 comment added Michael McGovern You know, I didn't stupidly say anything. I made a factual statement about a mathematical concept, a statement that had I confirmed was true with my superiors before I made it. It's not like I made a discriminatory statement, which would be most definitely grounds for dismissal since I work for a state agency. I apologize if this comes off as defensive, but I am having a hard time reading your comment as anything but a criticism of me speaking on the internet, as if that was the stupid thing in itself. I may have misunderstood.
