Apr 13, 2023 at 18:17 comment added Darrel Hoffman @MrVocabulary Of course, snails, being invertebrates, are technically not fish from a phylogenetic standpoint. But then neither are jellyfish or cuttlefish despite the names. A carrot plant does actually produce fruit, but that's not the part we generally eat.
Apr 12, 2023 at 10:17 comment added MrVocabulary In EU law, snails are officially fish, and carrots are fruits (so that carrot jam could be subsidized or something like that). Law uses normative statements, i.e. declaring word to mean this in law context.

Apr 11, 2023 at 14:14 comment added Chieron obligatory nitpick: taxonomically capybaras are fish, as are all birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals including humans. This should also illustrate the problems with using those terms without further clarification as to which meaning of "fish" is actually used.
Apr 11, 2023 at 14:08 comment added kaya3 @Vaelus Indeed, fish are animals; but depending on context, they are not meat.
Apr 11, 2023 at 12:16 comment added Vaelus You may wish to modify your example law to contain only one error, since fish are in fact animals.
