But then neither are jellyfish or cuttlefish despite the names. A carrot plant does actually produce fruit, but that's not the part we generally eat.
Apr 12, 2023 at 10:17 | comment | added | MrVocabulary | In EU law, snails are officially fish, and carrots are fruits (so that carrot jam could be subsidized or something like that). Law uses normative statements, i.e. declaring word to mean this in law context.

Apr 11, 2023 at 14:14 | comment | added | Chieron | obligatory nitpick: taxonomically capybaras are fish, as are all birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals including humans. This should also illustrate the problems with using those terms without further clarification as to which meaning of "fish" is actually used.
Apr 11, 2023 at 14:08 | comment | added | kaya3 | @Vaelus Indeed, fish are animals; but depending on context, they are not meat.
Apr 11, 2023 at 12:16 | comment | added | Vaelus | You may wish to modify your example law to contain only one error, since fish are in fact animals.
Apr 11, 2023 at 5:29 | comment | added | keshlam | Also relevant: businessinsider.com/fish-do-not-exist-2016-8 (among many other explanations of the fact that things we call "fish" may be less closely related to each other than they are to non-fish.)
