Dec 21, 2023 at 19:23 comment added Esther Jewish law also allows marriage by proxy. I've heard of a rather sticky situation where the proxy said "to me" (the standard phrasing which everyone knows) instead of "to [x person]" and the question is now who the woman is married to...
Dec 21, 2023 at 18:07 comment added WoJ @Stef Thanks. Being French, avoidance of bureaucracy is a goal in life so even after such a trip, in these circumstances, I would have fled the office because it can only be very difficult and once you put your finger in you are done forever :)
Dec 21, 2023 at 17:52 comment added Stef @WoJ They didn't know city hall had burned before they decided to go on the trip. When they arrive at the new city hall and learn that there is no record of their marriage. The clerk tells them about the rules regarding marriages whose paperworks were lost. Then one of the clerks mentions that it might still be possible to annul the marriage and I suppose at that point they think "we've come all this way, might as well do it" and don't realise what they're getting into
Dec 21, 2023 at 17:45 comment added WoJ @Stef do you know why they even cared at that point (when you mention "Lots of bureaucracy ensue" I assume they did). Both agree that their marriage is nil and deal done.
Dec 21, 2023 at 14:36 comment added MonkeyZeus @Bob If your twin has your social security number and wants to play the ultimate prank then they can marry you by forging your signature. Good luck proving that you're NOT married if there are enough bad actors.

Dec 21, 2023 at 11:55 comment added Stef They travel together to the city where they were married. However, the city hall where they got married was burned down along with all marriage certificates; due to these circumstances, there is a special law that says people who claim to have gotten married there are still considered legally married even in the absence of a legal marriage certificate. However the marriage cannot be annulled in the absence of the marriage certificate. Lots of bureaucracy ensue.
Dec 21, 2023 at 11:55 comment added Stef Awesome answer. This reminds me of the Chinese movie Apart together about a couple who got married, then immediately got geographically separated because of civil turmoil. They find eachother again... 50 years later. The woman has married someone else in the meantime and is now a grandmother, so they decide to formally annul their own marriage. (...)

Dec 20, 2023 at 22:20 comment added Bob I have been told that this has happened in the United States at least once but the person who told me this, did not have a good source backing him up.
