I was discharged from a Virginia mental ward in late November. It was my fourth in a year. When I was discharged, they referred me to my local community services board. I can't get in until late February. I've since called the hospital to try and do outpatient psychiatry there, but they say I am outside their service zone. I have also received no phone call follow up either.

Are hospitals obligated to ensure timely follow up? I won't survive to late February at this rat.

  • Hospitals and state agencies are required to do followup, but sometimes the bureaucracy gets in the way. You should call the main DBHDS phone in Richmond 804-786-3921 and tell them the local board can't schedule you until Feb; they should be able to contact them and get you in earlier. Or, go to the ER in the local hospital for help. Or, in VA, call 2-1-1 toll free, seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to midnight. – BlueDogRanch Dec 29 '16 at 19:29
