In a criminal trial, I've seen counsel walk over and show items to the opposing counsel that they wish to enter into evidence. After showing it to them, they'll begin laying the foundation sometimes by asking the witness if they know what the item is, etc.

But for instance if the defense wants to introduce a video into evidence, how can they walk over and show it to counsel, and wouldn't they have to show it to the court in order to start laying a foundation? If so, how does that get shown to the witness in order to ask if it's a true and reasonably correct video?
