In New York State, how long would a person require take to legally change their name?

I've read that it can take anywhere from one day to 6 months to a year.

What matters in deciding the time it takes to get a name changed completely? Is there any way to expedite the process?

At least two significant factors are how busy the court you file in is, and how diligent the judge assigned to your case is, neither of which are factors over which you have much control. Sometimes nagging the court clerk of the judge assigned to the case can speed things up, but sometimes that can annoy the judge and send your case to the bottom of the pile. – ohwilleke Feb 21 '18 at 5:02
  • Also, New York State allows certain forms of name changes to be accomplished as a matter of course on a marriage certificate (that is how I changed my surname when I married in New York State), and a name change can also be accomplished as part of a decree also addressing other matters in a domestic relations action. So the circumstances of the name change impact how long it will take. – ohwilleke Feb 21 '18 at 5:03
  • And, of course, the name you use is (one of) your legal names – Dale M Feb 21 '18 at 6:06
