If an off-duty police officer meets someone, and they turn up murdered, can the information acquired off duty be used in an investigation? For an example, imagine a police officer meets someone in a bar, who then leaves with another individual later in the night. If one of those people is murdered, is the police officer allowed to pursue the lead? Another example is in the X-Files episode “3” (S02E07).

You seem to be asking whether a police officer can use witness evidence when investigating a crime. – RedGrittyBrick Mar 21 '18 at 11:41

If he's both the investigator and the witness, that may raise uncomfortable questions. It'd be better for all involved if he at least got the case handed off to another officer to investigate. – cHao Mar 21 '18 at 16:17
