It is very difficult to find cats or dogs in Massachusetts that are not either (1) registered breeds sold by breeders (like golden retrievers), (2) shelter animals, or from (3) pet stores. If you look at Craigslist, this is obvious because there are about 10 wanted ads for every 1 puppy available ad at least.

I tried putting a wanted ad up offering a large amount of money for a particular type of pet I wanted (what you would pay a top breeder), but the ad got immediately removed from Craigslist because apparently it is against their rules to offer money for pets.

Is this because of a specific state law in Massachusetts that makes it illegal to buy pets from a private person, or is this just a company policy? If it is a law, which law is it?
