John Doe is working on a freelance writing project for Acme Inc. John is a US citizen, and Acme is a US company. John goes on a vacation to another country (England, if it matters). Can John continue working on the freelance project while outside the US?

3If John tells the UK immigration officer that he plans to work for his US client while in the UK, he will be denied leave to enter the UK. Is that the answer you're looking for?– phoogJun 25, 2022 at 6:23

2The UK immigration officer has power to examine an incoming person's baggage to determine whether they are really intending to visit the UK for tourist purposes. If diaries, documentation, etc, found therein suggest otherwise, they may be denied leave to enter, and the fact that they used deception to attempt entry may be recorded and shared with other countries. This does happen. A lot.– Michael HarveyJun 25, 2022 at 7:46

For example if they say 'I've come to "England" to look at castles/museums/Buckingham Palace/etc' and the IO finds a diary or bundle of letters revealing an online romance with a UK resident.
